As a visual medium stained glass is incredibly diverse and extends far beyond the realms of historic church windows. Today they can be used as an exciting, colourful and different way in which to view the world. At Sherriff Stained Glass Specialists Stained Glass we’ve put together our favourite contemporary stained glass installations.

Miami International Airport, Florida – “Harmonic Convergence” by Christopher Janney

Christopher Janney is an American sound architect who works primarily with sound and light manipulation. ‘Harmonic Convergence’ is a stained glass art installation created within the pedestrian walkway at Miami International Airport to coincide and celebrate two major annual design exhibitions: Art Basel Miami Beach and Design Miami.

As you walk down the walkway speakers placed at regular intervals create a continuously shifting ‘sonic portrait’ of southern Florida; you can hear tropical birds, typical weather and other sounds relative to the region. Video sensors at either end of the walkway track visitor movement and density to alter the composition so the experience is always unique.

The Great Hall, NGV International, Melbourne – Leonard French

The National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne features one of the largest suspended stained glass ceilings in the world. Designed by Australian stained glass artist Leonard French the Great Hall is now one of the most iconic pieces of Australian stained glass architecture.
