Bedales Window Restoration

Sherriff Stained Glass Specialists is proud to announce that we are working on a major window restoration project for Bedales School in Steep, nr Petersfield, Hampshire.

Founded in 1893, Bedales is an independent school for children aged 13-18.  It has a variety of buildings of significant historical interest including the Grade I listed Lupton Hall built in 1911 and the Steephurst building which is over 250 years old and used as a boarding house for the girls of the school.

Following the successful window restoration by Sherriff Stained Glass Specialists Stained Glass of the Grade I listed Memorial Library several years ago, Sherriff Stained Glass Specialists has been asked to return to restore the windows in a Grade I listed house owned by the school.

Ernest Grimson designed Stonywell house for his brother Sydney, which has recently come into National Trust ownership. It was Ernest Grimson that designed the Memorial Library and the Lupton Hall at Bedales. Geoffrey Henry Lupton (b. 2 September 1882 – d. 31 December 1949) is best known for his contribution to the Arts and Crafts Movement working with Ernest Grimson.

Ernest’s nephew, Humphrey Grimson, designed a house for his elder brother Basil when Basil returned to Bedales to teach. This house is Five Oaks where Sherriff Stained Glass Specialists is now restoring the windows. It is an almost completely unaltered example of a small house with an extremely high standard of design and finish.

Some of the furniture that the National Trust has acquired at Stoneywell was originally made for Five Oaks and used by Basil Grimson.

Ernest Grimson (b. Leicester 21 Dec 1864 – d. Sapperton 12 August 1919), was an English furniture designer and architect. Grimson was described by an art critic as the greatest of the English architect-designers.  His reputation today is established as one of the most influential designers of the English Arts and Crafts Movement.

The removal phase started at the beginning of July and re fitting will hopefully be completed by winter. Sherriff Stained Glass Specialists is excited to be working on this ambitious project that will not only help to preserve Five Oaks for future generations but will also protect the valuable architectural assets it represents for British architecture.
