Common Stained Glass Window Repairs

July 5, 2022

Stained glass windows are incredibly durable and strong. There are examples of stained glass windows in historical and religious buildings that are hundreds of years old. Although stained glass panels can last for years, they are still susceptible to damage. We often perform stained glass restoration because of environmental damage or vandalism. As stained glass specialists, we have years of experience repairing and restoring various stained glass window defects. Read on to discover some of the most common stained glass window repairs we perform at Sherriff Stained Glass Specialists.

Repairing chipped or cracked glass

One of the most common stained glass window repairs we perform is replacing chipped or cracked panels. People often assume that once a piece of stained glass has started to break, it is beyond repair. As experts in stained glass repair, we know how to restore damaged panels to perfect condition. If a single piece of the stained glass window has a chip or crack, then we can remove and replace it.

Re-leading stained glass

An issue that we often see with stained glass is damage to the lead joints. Leaded connections sometimes warp or break. If a leaded glass panel has started to warp it is very important to perform a stained glass repair as quickly as possible. Warped panels can lead to broken glass and further damage to the windows. If lead joints brake, then this can allow water in between the glass panels which only accelerates the issue.

Fire or water damage

Sometimes there are factors outside of our control that require stained glass restoration. Many of the jobs repairing stained glass windows we do at Sherriff Stained Glass Specialists are a result of environmental factors or fire damage. Storms or strong winds often cause problems for stained glass, especially if left unattended for some time. Where there has been any water or fire damage, our experts at Sherriff Stained Glass Specialists are here to help. We evaluate which sections of the stained glass windows need replacing and then take the panel back to our workshop. Once we complete the stained glass repair, we reinstall the panel back into the frame.

Stained glass windows frames

Repairing stained glass window frames is similar in many ways to lead restoration. If the solder surrounding a stained glass panel has become damaged, then the risk is that the window will be more susceptible to breaking. Securing a stained glass window in the frame ensures that the panel will be strong and stable for many years to come.

Stained glass doors

One of the most important stained glass repairs we perform is to stained glass doors. It is becoming more popular to have stained glass windows in a front door.
