Steve Sherriff have over 25 years’ experience manufacturing leaded windows, otherwise known as leaded glass or leaded lights. During this time, we mastered the traditional techniques used to make high-quality and long lasting leaded windows, and use traditional materials to recreate a truly authentic window suitable for any home or building, new or old with a life of in excess of 100 years.
How we manufacture leaded windows
We manufacture leaded windows by piecing panes of glass together supported by a lead support to act as the backbone of a panel. These supports are known as cames; the main features of leaded windows that give the antiquarian and vintage character so many desire. We also use tinned copper wire ties on leaded windows which prevent any green staining due to age. From designing the leaded windows to creating and fitting the panels, we are experts in every step of the process. View the Steve Sherriff gallery of leaded windows to see examples of windows with lead cames.
Alongside the production and fitting of leaded windows, Steve Sherriff also specialises in lead window restoration and repair. We are able to reinstate any existing leaded windows that have deteriorated over time or been damaged. If conservation is the aim, we would remove the original strengthening bars, refurbish them, dip the ends in lead or weld on stainless steel ends or if conservation is not required we replace the original decaying bars with Stainless Steel, Lead Covered Steel or Phospher Bronze bars
