The Brief‍

Leaded windows can add an authentic and traditional feel to any home, church or Grade 1 or 2 listed and protected buildings. However, with age, leaded glass windows can have cracked solder joints, fragile lead cames or loose rattling glass, causing them to deteriorate. We were recently approached by a restaurant on Station Road, Swanage with this exact problem and were asked to complete lead window restoration to transform the front of their building.

The restaurant’s five leaded windows appeared to be damaged, so the team got to work by removing the panels and moving them to our workshop to undergo a full lead window restoration. We then replaced any cracked or missing glass before re-leading each panel. Following this, we decided to refurbish the metal frames in situ to ensure that we did not disturb or damage the restaurant front’s framework. Then, each leaded window panel was re glazed in the same order which they were removed. They were then bedded in on a paintable linseed oil-based putty, which cures over time.

We can also replace your old strengthening bars with lead covered mild steel, phosphor bronze or stainless steel, which all promise high quality and reliability.

‍The Result

‍Through executing lead window restoration, the restaurant on Station Road in Swanage was left with a polished and high-quality finish ready for their restaurant opening in March 2019.
