Leaded Windows & Metal Window Frame Restoration – The Old Post Office, Alton

The Brief

Earlier this year, Sherriff Stained Glass Specialists stained glass specialists and window restoration company received a brief from The Old Post Office in Alton, Hampshire. The task was to re-lead and restore leaded windows and metal window frames to increase durability and improve the overall look of the building. Window restoration can help to extend the life of windows by up to 100 years.

Getting to Work

Our team of experts got to work by firstly removing each leaded window for remedial work back at our workshop in Dorset. At our workshop, each leaded glass window was carefully taken apart to ensure as much of the original glass as possible was conserved. A combination of the original glass and new glass was used to re-lead the twenty-two windows.

Then, we went ahead and began the restoration of the metal casement windows. We started by bead blasting each frame back to sound metal, removing all old paint and fillers that had built up over the years. We then replaced or repaired any rusted metal where necessary, before applying a zinc rich primer and finishing with a satin white powder topcoat using our workshop kilns.

Once the windows and casements were re-leaded and restored, we returned to The Old Post Office for a complete refit.

The Result

Following our work at The Old Post Office, the leaded windows and metal window frames now have a new and improved appearance and structure for many years to come.
