Stained Glass Window Restoration For The New Livingstone Academy in Bournemouth
Livingstone Academy Bournemouth will be open in September 2021. Initially, there will be 150 places for Year 7 pupils and 60 places for Reception Children. The academy is a collaboration between Steve and Paula Kenning, CEOs of Aspirations Academies Trust and Ian Livingstone, a digital entrepreneur and one of the founding fathers of the UK game’s industry..
The Brief
The brand new Livingstone Academy in Bournemouth is set to open in September 2021. Contracted by Kier Group, Sherriff Stained Glass Specialists stained glass specialists were tasked with undertaking stained glass window restoration for the new Livingstone Academy. This would involve metal window frame and leaded window repair alongside restoring the stained glass.
Getting to Work
The first step for the stained glass window restoration was to remove the feature window from the stairwell. This stained glass window piece was removed from the former magistrate’s court. We then took it back to our new workshop for re-leading and repairs. The process of restoring stained glass windows requires delicate attention and skill. Our team of stained glass specialists carefully carried out the leaded window repair to restore stability to the piece. This process ensures the stained glass window is made to last another lifetime.
Another part of the removal process was to refurbish the existing metal window frames. We shot blasted the metal opening frames back to a stable and durable metal. We then applied a zinc rich primer before adding a satin white top-coat reinforced with heat. This was to improve the robustness of the opening metal window frames. Once complete, we then moved onto the final stages of the stained glass window restoration. This involved us restoring colour to the stained glass window.
The Result
The stained glass window restoration we carried out for the Livingstone Academy was a success. The refurbishment of the opening metal window frames improved their durability and sturdiness. The leaded window repair also reinforced the overall strength of the stained glass piece. By restoring the faded colour, the stained glass window has now regained its character and visual appearance. This makes a great feature piece in the soon-to-be-open Academy.
